Frequently Asked Questions

Q    Why can't I get into your site?

A    You are in our site. There is nothing more to the site than what you see here on this page. This site is not yet designed, staffed, or open for business. This site has never been intentionally advertised. Whoever referred you to this site did so in error.

Q    But I heard about it on a radio call-in show. And my friend heard about it in a newspaper. Are you sure you're not open?

A    Yes.

Q    Can you direct me to where I meant to go?

A    No. If you think about it, this is the same as calling a wrong number and asking the party who answers "Can you tell me who I meant to call?" Unfortunately, on our limited resources, we have no access to ESP and cannot imagine where you meant to go instead. Sorry!

Maybe you should try a search engine or internet directory service:

News Search:

For answers to technical questions when more formal support from your vendor doesn't work, we can make no guarantees but we've had good success with DejaNews.

Q    It's really starting to sound to me like you're not going to help me set up my LAN so that multiple machines can run on the same cable modem.

A    That's right. But we certainly get this question a lot.

Maybe you can get help from Netgear with this. Look specifically at the Netgear RT311 (if you have a hub or router already) or RT314 (if you don't have a hub or router). This is a hardware solution to your problem, but it's very flexible and suprisingly affordable. We presently get no monetary kickback for making this recommendation; we just like their whole line of home network products a lot. For further information, contact them, not us!

We also recently learned there is an http://www.annoyances.org/ which has some answers to questions like this. You might try there. But we still personally like the Netgear approach, and decided to give them top billing here.

Q    And you're not going to help me with configuring the way I log into my Windows system or use my Internet Explorer, are you?

A    You're catching on.

Maybe try Microsoft support.

Or if you don't like your Microsoft browser, you should maybe try another. For example, one from Netscape.

Or, once again, http://www.annoyances.org/ might be able to help.

But it's not the kind of question we're presently set up to handle.

Q    So what's the deal with www.annoyances.org you keep mentioning?

Isn't www.annoyance.org just a sham that is trying to catch net traffic that comes from people misspelling their name?

Why don't you just slither back into the ground where you came from and stop this pathetic attempt to pretend you could ever be better than they already are?

A    After almost a year of looking for other sites that might be getting confused with us, we only just learned about them. As a matter of both history and practice, our site has nothing to do with theirs. We don't consider ourselves competition and apologize for the fact that the network namespace is so densely packed with names that sound alike but offer such different services. The kind of service we are actively plannning to roll out here is very different than what they now offer.

In answer to the question about whether we are a sham, we hope not. Please give us time to first become what we intend to be, then decide. For now, we are just a placeholder for something yet to come.

As to slithering back into the ground where we came from: We'll take a "rain check" on that one. We won't be doing any slithering away at least until we've rolled out the site in its future form and had a chance to see what people think of it. Meanwhile, again, our apologies for the name confusion.

Q    Are these questions in the FAQ really the kinds of questions you've gotten in email?

A    Pretty much. The text isn't literally what people have written but the essential content is about the same. We got tired of answering the same kinds of questions over and over, so figured we'd just make this page to help cut down on the email. And it has! Thanks for reading it.

Q    Ok. I've read the rest of your disclaimers and I promise I understand that you're not open for business yet. But I have suggestions about what you might do with this site when you do open it. Where do I send such suggestions?

A    We can't promise we'll act on your suggestions, and you should understand that any suggestion you make becomes our property to do as we please. But sure, with that understanding, you can send requests and suggestions to annoyance@annoyance.org. Please correspond in plain text only. For security reasons, word's .doc files and other more exotic file types and attachments will not be opened.

Q    I'm out of questions. What should I do now?

A    You should have a nice day, of course!

If you're really out of places to surf, here are some other sites we think are well worth your time:
